It is very commonly seen growing in rural and suburban areas of Bengal. It belongs to the Amaranthus viridis species, which is called shak-notey, notey shak or gima shak in Bengali. The leaves are large, oval and shiny green. The edges of the leaves are slightly wavy. The stem is soft and green in color. It grows more in summer and monsoon, but can grow throughout the year.
