In Bengali, it is commonly called Tulsi. It is widely known as a medicinal plant and is also used in worship in Hinduism. Usually grows up to 30–60 cm tall. The leaves are oval, green, slightly rough and have saw-like spots on the edges. The leaves have light hairs and emit a fragrance when touched. The flowers are small, light purple or white in color, bloom in clusters at the tips of the branches. The seeds are small, black and hard. There are 2 types of Tulsi trees. 1. Ram Tulsi – green leaves, relatively mild in taste. 2. If you have a cold, cough and fever, eating boiled basil leaves reduces cold, cough and fever. If you have asthma and breathing problems, drinking the juice of the leaves with honey is beneficial. If you have digestive problems, basil works well for gas, heartburn and stomach pain. For skin diseases: Applying the paste of the leaves on boils or wounds dries them up quickly. Regular consumption of basil leaves increases immunity. Tulsi Mancha (a paved altar made around the basil tree) is used as an auspicious symbol in Hindu homes.
