THE DAY A HERDSMAN TOLD ME WHY HE FLED ADAMAWA STATE BECAUSE OF THE AFRICAN BUFFALO 🦬 It was sometime in 2023. I was still the manager of the farm, when a group of Fulani herdsmen approached me with a request. "Aboki, please give us a portion of this land to settle with our cattle." As an agronomist, I was curious. I called their leader, a man named Akujo, and asked him a simple question: "Where are you people coming from, and why did you leave?" His answer surprised me. He told me they had relocated from a forest area along the border of Taraba and Adamawa States. According to him, they often grazed their cattle close to Gashaka-Gumti National Park. Then he said something I wasn't expecting. «"We have lost many cows to buffalo attacks."» At first, I thought he was exaggerating. I asked again. "You mean the buffalo killed your cattle?" He nodded. He explained that the African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is one of the most dangerous wild animals in Africa. Whenever their cattle strayed too close, an aggressive buffalo could charge, gore, or trample them, sometimes killing them. I was genuinely shocked. I had always associated danger in the forest with lions or leopards. I never imagined a buffalo could be so feared. Then I asked him a question that made everyone around laugh. "But you people carry guns. Why not just shoot the buffalo?" Akujo smiled, looked at me, and said quietly: «"You don't know what you're saying. If you ever meet one in the bush, you won't even have the courage to raise your gun."» That statement stayed with me. Many people think forests are just collections of trees. They are not. They are living ecosystems filled with wildlife that deserves respect. Nigeria is still home to remarkable animals, and protected areas like Gashaka-Gumti National Park remind us of the country's rich biodiversity. As farmers, hunters, herders, or adventurers, we should never underestimate what lives in our forests. Sometimes, the biggest lesson comes from listening to people who have spent their lives in the wild. And there's still the Cape Buffalo 🦬 yet o...
